What is Project Lead the Way?

PLTW creates an engaging classroom environment unlike any other. PLTW empowers students to develop and apply in-demand, transportable skills by exploring real-world challenges. Through our pathways in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, students not only learn technical skills, but also learn to solve problems, think critically and creatively, communicate, and collaborate.

What is Medical Detectives?

Medical Detectives is a nine-week STEM unit of study. Each unit will expose students to the principles of biology to investigate body systems, genetics, and forensics. Students will learn how to conduct blood pressure measurements, explore conditions that can lead to food poisoning and disease outbreaks, investigate genetic testing, examine anatomy and physiology of body systems, and solve a forensic murder case.

This unit aims to develop students’ understanding of biology and introduce them to its applications within the

biomedical sciences field.

This unit is comprised of 3 lessons:

Lesson 1: What is a Medical Detective? Students will discover how healthcare professionals act as medical detectives in identifying, treating, and preventing injury and illness in their patients.

Lesson 2: Mysteries of the Human Body... Students investigate the nervous system, including brain anatomy and physiology. A mysterious illness prompts the students to explore the role of genetics in disease.

Lesson 3: Murder Mystery...immerses the students in the world of crime scene investigators, medical examiners, and pathologists. Students have the opportunity to work through a virtual autopsy and explore how a suspect may be identified through DNA analysis in the process of solving the crime.
